The Big Christmas Basket: 200+ Christmas Novels, Stories, Poems & Carols (Illustrated)

The Big Christmas Basket gathers more than two hundred illustrated novels, tales, poems, and carols into a capacious archive of Christmas writing. Its range extends from devotional lyric and traditional seasonal song to domestic realism, fairy tale, comic anecdote, moral fable, ghostly fantasy, and cosmopolitan short fiction. Canonical Victorian and Romantic modes meet children's literature, American regionalism, and European storytelling, making the volume a vivid record of how Christmas has been imagined as sacred ritual, family celebration, social critique, and occasion for wonder. The contributors form an unusually broad transatlantic and international constellation: poets, novelists, journalists, folklorists, children's writers, and masters of the modern short story. British, American, Scandinavian, French, Spanish, Russian, and German traditions converge here, joining nineteenth-century sentiment and reform-minded social observation to folklore, realism, and the literary fairy tale. Established classics appear alongside once-popular writers of juvenile and domestic fiction, whose work illuminates the period's ideals of hospitality, charity, childhood, and communal responsibility. This anthology is recommended to readers seeking both festive pleasure and a substantial literary panorama. Its multiplicity of forms and national perspectives invites comparison between sacred and secular Christmases, private homes and public streets, inherited custom and imaginative reinvention. Students, scholars, and general readers alike will find an educationally rich volume whose illustrations and varied texts foster a continuing dialogue about the season's enduring cultural meanings.
