Selected Sermons of Jonathan Edwards (Annotated)

Selected Sermons of Jonathan Edwards gathers some of the most searching religious prose of eighteenth-century America, including works that unite rigorous Calvinist theology with an intensely affective rhetoric. Edwards's sermons move between metaphysical precision, biblical exegesis, and startling imagery, seeking not merely to instruct but to awaken the conscience. Situated within the Great Awakening and the Puritan homiletic tradition, they reveal a literary style at once severe, imaginative, and philosophically exacting. Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758), minister, theologian, and later president of the College of New Jersey, wrote from the center of New England's evangelical revivals. His pastoral experience in Northampton, his commitment to Reformed doctrine, and his keen interest in the psychology of religious experience shaped these sermons profoundly. Edwards sought to distinguish genuine spiritual transformation from mere enthusiasm, making his preaching both doctrinally formidable and spiritually diagnostic. This collection is recommended for readers interested in American religious history, early American literature, theology, or the rhetoric of persuasion.
