Epistle Sermons of Martin Luther (Annotated)

Epistle Sermons of Martin Luther gathers Luther's homiletic expositions on the apostolic readings appointed for the church year, transforming Pauline and Petrine doctrine into urgent evangelical proclamation. Written in a vigorous, direct, and often polemical style, these sermons exemplify Reformation preaching: Scripture interprets Scripture, faith is set against works-righteousness, and Christian liberty is joined to ethical responsibility. They stand within the medieval sermon tradition while decisively reshaping it around justification by faith and the pastoral use of the gospel. Martin Luther, the Augustinian friar turned reformer, wrote from the crucible of early sixteenth-century religious controversy. His training in Scripture, his struggles with conscience, and his opposition to indulgences and scholastic merit theology all inform these sermons. As professor, preacher, and translator, Luther sought not merely to dispute doctrine but to teach ordinary Christians how the apostolic word addressed fear, sin, vocation, suffering, and communal life. This volume is recommended for readers seeking access to Luther as preacher rather than merely controversialist. The sermons reward theologians, historians, clergy, and serious general readers with a vivid portrait of Reformation faith in practice: doctrinally forceful, rhetorically earthy, pastorally searching, and persistently centered on Christ. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience.- A comprehensive Introduction outlines these selected works' unifying features, themes, or stylistic evolutions.- The Author Biography highlights personal milestones and literary influences that shape the entire body of writing.- A Historical Context section situates the works in their broader era—social currents, cultural trends, and key events that underpin their creation.- A concise Synopsis (Selection) offers an accessible overview of the included texts, helping readers navigate plotlines and main ideas without revealing critical twists.- A unified Analysis examines recurring motifs and stylistic hallmarks across the collection, tying the stories together while spotlighting the different work's strengths.- Reflection questions inspire deeper contemplation of the author's overarching message, inviting readers to draw connections among different texts and relate them to modern contexts.- Lastly, our hand‐picked Memorable Quotes distill pivotal lines and turning points, serving as touchstones for the collection's central themes.
