Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons (Annotated)

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God & Other Sermons gathers Jonathan Edwards's most formidable pulpit writings, sermons in which metaphysical rigor, biblical typology, and urgent pastoral rhetoric converge. The title sermon, preached during the Great Awakening, is famed for its stark imagery of human frailty suspended over divine judgment, yet the collection also reveals Edwards's larger theological vision: grace, conversion, providence, and the affections as central realities of Christian life. Its prose is lucid, terrifying, and exacting, belonging to the Puritan homiletic tradition while anticipating the emotional intensity of evangelical revivalism. Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758), minister, theologian, philosopher, and later president of the College of New Jersey, wrote from within the intellectual and spiritual ferment of colonial New England. Educated at Yale and shaped by Reformed theology, Lockean psychology, and pastoral experience in Northampton, Edwards sought to diagnose the soul with uncommon precision. His sermons reflect both learned speculation and the immediate pressures of awakening, controversy, and congregational renewal.
