Whitewash

Lady Selina Chandos manages her family the way she manages her correspondence, and an inconvenient truth is whitewashed so smoothly that only the person it is done to objects. Horace Annesley Vachell ranched in California for seventeen years before coming home to write about the English governing class. The comedy is in the manners and the cruelty is in the arrangements. Fifty-five plates drawn from Orchardson and Tissot trace the same world of drawing rooms, courts and quiet arrangements that Vachell turns into comedy.
