The Trail of the Lonesome Pine

A mountain girl in the Cumberland gap, an engineer from the flatland who comes to open the coal, and a feud that predates both of them. Fox lived among the mountain people he wrote about; this was one of the best-selling American novels of its decade and made the folded hills into a national picture. Forty-four plates by painters from Winslow Homer to James McNeill Whistler follow the mountain girl from girlhood to womanhood, matching the novel's progress from lonesome trail to settled valley.
