Joan and Co.

A New York debutante with a mind of her own and a Harvard man who cannot decide whether he is courting her or her father's business. Frederick Orin Bartlett wrote briskly and knew the Boston and New York of 1917. The comedy is in the girl's refusal to be managed and the plot turns on money she was not supposed to understand. Fifty-eight plates, from Mary Cassatt's women at their dressing tables to Winslow Homer's coastal light, picture the world of manners and money Joan navigates.
