Emily Fox-Seton

A thirty-four-year-old gentlewoman of no fortune earns her living running errands for society women, and is proposed to by a marquess who has watched how she behaves when nobody is watching. Burnett wrote it for adults; it was a stage hit and the situation has been rewritten a hundred times since. This edition binds fifty plates of painting with the text, among them works by William Powell Frith, Walter Sickert and Harold Gilman, alongside one restored and coloured illustration.
