Elinor Wyllys

A New England village, a girl who is not beautiful, and the men who take twenty years to notice her worth. Susan Fenimore Cooper wrote it with her father James Fenimore Cooper acting as her agent and editor; it was the only novel she published, and she gave the rest of her working life to natural history and to her father's papers. Fifty-eight plates by painters including John Constable and Edvard Munch trace the village, church, and street scenes that give this tale of old New England its quiet, weathered light.
