Addie's Husband

Complete and unabridged, with 57 full-page plates by Marianne North, John Everett Millais and Alfred Sisley. A woman marries for a home rather than for love, and the husband turns out to have a mind and a past of his own. Mrs. Gordon Smythies wrote domestic novels for the circulating libraries. It is a modest book with one unusual quality: the marriage improves, and the improvement is shown as work rather than as revelation. Fifty-seven plates after Wilkie and Tissot, from cottage interiors and grace before meat to young women in boats, keep the domestic world of the novel steadily in view.
