The Life and Genius of Nathaniel Hawthorne

A life of Hawthorne by a man who had known his family and worked from the papers - the Salem years, the custom house, Brook Farm and the consulate at Liverpool. Stearns is honest about the silences in his subject. This edition carries 58 plates of painting bound with the text, among them works by Eastman Johnson, George Inness, Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt, with a preface, three appendices and an index.
