The Motor Maid

Lys d'Angely, left without a sou, takes a place as maid-companion to a lady about to tour France in a sixty-horse-power motor car — and finds that the thing she dreads most is the English chauffeur, with whom she will have to eat at every inn. The Williamsons built their motoring romances on real roads and real hotels, and the comedy here is all in who dines with whom, and who is not quite what he seems. Fifty-five plates by painters from Béraud to Matisse follow the same French roads the motor car takes, from Paris kiosks and Seine banks to the dining rooms and hotel interiors where the maid and the chauffeur must share their meals.
