The Book of Missionary Heroes

Missionary lives told as adventure for young readers - St Paul and Raymond Lull, Francis of Assisi, the South Sea pioneers of the ship Duff, Mary Slessor and the pathfinders of Africa, and the missionaries of the Arabian desert. Mathews wrote for the missionary societies and knew how to keep a boy reading. Fifty-seven plates by painters including Thomas Baines and Marianne North carry the far horizons of the missionary story, from Cape Town beaches and African baobabs to boats in a gale.
