Malvina of Brittany

A Breton fairy, exiled from her people for a piece of mischief, is found on a hillside and taken back to an English village — where she sets about improving people, with results. Jerome was orphaned at fifteen and worked as a railway clerk and an actor before Three Men in a Boat; this 1916 book was written in the middle of the war, by a man who had just driven ambulances in France at fifty-six. Fifty-nine plates, among them landscapes by Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch, run through the book as a painted counterpart to its Breton hillsides and waterside villages.
