The Cruise of the Kawa

Complete and unabridged, with 32 full-page plates by Joseph Heard, Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. A learned account of an expedition to the undiscovered island of Filbert in the South Seas, complete with photographs, appendices and a family of natives who live on nothing but fermented breadfruit. It was published in 1921 as a genuine travel book, reviewed as one, and the hoax held for a full season. Thirty-two plates of nineteenth-century sea painting by Joseph Heard and Gustave Courbet carry the same salt air and tall ships as the voyage itself.
