The Martial Adventures of Henry and Me

Two middle-aged Kansas newspapermen go to France in 1917 with the Red Cross and report the war as two tourists who cannot quite believe where they are. White edited the Emporia Gazette for nearly half a century and made a small Kansas paper a national voice; the comedy here is real and so is what he saw, and the join between the two is the point of the book. Thirty-seven plates of stormy seas, naval graves and burning steamers by painters including Charles Cottet and Alfred Stevens give the war at sea its visual counterpoint.
