Children's Books and Their Illustrators

A survey of the illustrated children's book from the chapbook woodcut to the 1890s: Bewick, Cruikshank, Doyle, Tenniel, Caldecott, Greenaway, Crane. Gleeson White edited "The Studio" and wrote as an authority on printing as well as on drawing. He is best on the technical revolutions — wood-engraving, colour lithography, process blocks — and on what each did to the pictures. Its 71 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
