Footprints of Former Men in Far Cornwall

Complete and unabridged, with 59 full-page plates by Thomas Cole, J. M. W. Turner and Winslow Homer. Cornish lives and legends by the vicar of Morwenstow: the wreckers, the smugglers, the hermit of Roche, the saints who came over on millstones, and the parish he served for forty years. Hawker wrote "The Song of the Western Men" and invented the harvest festival; his prose is as strange as his verse. He believed most of what he tells and reports the rest exactly as he heard it. Fifty-nine plates by painters including Turner and Constable follow the same coastline Hawker walked, from wreck-strewn headlands to quiet harbours, matching his strange tales with the sea and shore they belong to.
