ARABIAN NIGHTS: Andrew Lang's 1001 Nights & R. L. Stevenson's New Arabian Nights (Annotated)

Bringing together Andrew Lang's reshaping of the 1001 Nights tradition with Robert Louis Stevenson's New Arabian Nights, this volume traces the afterlives of oriental tale, romance, and adventure in late-Victorian literary culture. Its range extends from magical transformations, perilous voyages, and moral fables to urban mysteries, ironic quests, and sophisticated experiments in framed narration. Standout sequences such as enchanted journeys, riddling encounters, and clandestine societies reveal how inherited wonder-tales could be reimagined as both children's literature and modern fiction. Lang and Stevenson were central figures in the Victorian revival of romance, folklore, and popular narrative art. Lang's editorial and folkloric interests helped preserve and domesticate global story traditions for English readers, while Stevenson's fiction transformed the Arabian Nights model into a vehicle for psychological suspense, metropolitan fantasy, and playful literary self-consciousness. Together, their works illuminate the cultural currents of imperial Britain, comparative folklore, and fin-de-siècle experimentation. This anthology is ideal for readers seeking a compact yet richly layered encounter with the Arabian Nights' influence on English literature. It offers an unusual dialogue between adaptation and reinvention, between medieval wonder and modern narrative craft. Students, scholars, and general readers alike will find in it a valuable gateway to questions of storytelling, cultural transmission, genre, and the enduring power of imaginative prose. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience.- An Introduction draws the threads together, discussing why these diverse authors and texts belong in one collection.- Historical Context explores the cultural and intellectual currents that shaped these works, offering insight into the shared (or contrasting) eras that influenced each writer.- A combined Synopsis (Selection) briefly outlines the key plots or arguments of the included pieces, helping readers grasp the anthology's overall scope without giving away essential twists.- A collective Analysis highlights common themes, stylistic variations, and significant crossovers in tone and technique, tying together writers from different backgrounds.- Reflection questions encourage readers to compare the different voices and perspectives within the collection, fostering a richer understanding of the overarching conversation.
