This paired volume brings into conversation the enduring marvels of the Eastern tale tradition with a brilliant Victorian reimagining of its narrative machinery. The tales of enchantment, disguise, moral testing, and providential reversal associated with One Thousand and One Nights meet the urbane suspense, irony, and episodic intrigue of New Arabian Nights. Together they illuminate how framed storytelling, adventure, and the pleasures of serial revelation shaped nineteenth-century literary taste. Andrew Lang, folklorist, translator, and tireless mediator of world story traditions for English readers, helped establish the Arabian Nights as a central text of comparative folklore and popular literature. Robert Louis Stevenson, novelist, essayist, and master of romance, adapts its patterns of chance encounter and nested mystery to modern metropolitan settings. Their combined work reflects Victorian interests in Orientalism, folklore, romance, and the expanding possibilities of short fiction, while also revealing the tensions between inherited wonder and modern skepticism. Readers will find here a uniquely rich encounter between source, adaptation, and transformation. The collection invites study of narrative framing, cross-cultural imagination, genre, and the migration of motifs across time and place. It is especially rewarding for those seeking both the educational breadth of classic tale cycles and the literary excitement of inventive modern romance. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience.- An Introduction draws the threads together, discussing why these diverse authors and texts belong in one collection.- Historical Context explores the cultural and intellectual currents that shaped these works, offering insight into the shared (or contrasting) eras that influenced each writer.- A combined Synopsis (Selection) briefly outlines the key plots or arguments of the included pieces, helping readers grasp the anthology's overall scope without giving away essential twists.- A collective Analysis highlights common themes, stylistic variations, and significant crossovers in tone and technique, tying together writers from different backgrounds.- Reflection questions encourage readers to compare the different voices and perspectives within the collection, fostering a richer understanding of the overarching conversation.
