Rock-climbing in the English Lake District

The classic guide to the Lakeland crags: the gullies of Scafell, the Napes needle, Great Gable and the Pillar Rock, with the routes graded and the difficulties described exactly. Owen Glynne Jones was the finest rock climber in England of his day and was killed in the Alps at thirty-one, two years after this appeared. The book made Lakeland climbing a sport with a literature. Fifty-eight plates by painters including Constable and Turner follow the same mountain light and water that Jones climbed by.
