The Story of Mary Jones and Her Bible

Complete and unabridged, with 40 full-page plates by Marianne North, John Everett Millais and John Constable. A Welsh girl saves her pennies for six years, then walks twenty-five miles barefoot to Bala to buy a Bible — and finds them all sold. Mary Ropes wrote this in 1882 from the records of the Bible Society, which was founded as a direct result of what happened at the end of that walk. The story is true and the book made it known across the world. Forty paintings from Constable to Clausen, gathered here as country scenes of fields, flocks and farmhouse doors that answer the Welsh lanes and hills of Mary Jones's long walk.
