The Terms of Surrender

Colorado silver country: a man who loses everything on a mining deal, a woman he cannot have, and twenty years spent getting back what was taken — in a place where the law arrives after the shooting. Tracy was a Fleet Street journalist who wrote at speed under several names, including Gordon Holmes; the mining detail is real, which is more than can be said for most Westerns written in London. Fifty-seven plates of Rocky Mountain and canyon painting by Charles Marion Russell and Thomas Moran carry the silver camps, card games and hard country of the novel.
