THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS (Illustrated Edition)

Lewis Carroll's *Through the Looking-Glass* (1871), presented here in an illustrated edition featuring John Tenniel's iconic engravings, is a sophisticated sequel to *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland*. Passing through a mirror, Alice enters a reversibly structured world governed by chess rules, linguistic paradox, nursery-rhyme violence, and dreamlike transformations. Carroll's prose combines mathematical precision with comic incongruity: dialogues expose the instability of logic, while poems such as "Jabberwocky" demonstrate how sound and grammar can generate meaning independently of ordinary sense. Its episodic design, playful typography, and inversion of Victorian manners place the work within the nineteenth-century tradition of nonsense literature, while also anticipating modern experiments in language, narrative perspective, and surreal fantasy. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, writing under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was a mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman, photographer, and lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford. His professional fascination with symbolic systems and logical structure informs the book's puzzles, wordplay, and carefully organized chess framework. At the same time, Carroll's sustained interest in childhood imagination enabled him to challenge the moralizing conventions of much Victorian children's literature. The result is neither simple escapism nor a didactic tale, but a work shaped by the productive tension between rational order and imaginative freedom. This illustrated edition is especially suited to readers interested in the relationship between text and image, since Tenniel's visual interpretations have become inseparable from the cultural identity of Wonderland and the Looking-Glass world. It will reward children with comic adventure and adults with philosophical, linguistic, and literary complexity, making it an enduringly valuable classic for study, teaching, and rereading.
