The Care and Feeding of Children

The catechism of American child-rearing for forty years: feeding by the clock, fresh air, cold baths, the exact composition of modified milk, and what to do about crying. Holt was the leading pediatrician of his day and wrote it in question-and-answer form for nurses and mothers in 1894. Half of it saved lives; the other half is the reason a generation was raised on schedules, and both halves are here to be read. Fifty-seven paintings from 1838 to 1914, among them Mary Cassatt and John Frederick Kensett, gather the quiet interiors and open skies of the world Holt's mothers and nurses moved through.
