Furze the Cruel

On Dartmoor the furze burns and grows back, and the people are not much different: a squatter's family, a scholar who came for his health, a girl who is spoiled by kindness. Trevena was really Ernest Henham, a novelist who moved to the moor's edge and wrote three novels named for what survives there — furze, heather and granite. Bleak, exact, and almost entirely forgotten. Sixty plates from 1840 to 1910, among them Millais and Hammershøi, turn on the same stubborn interiors and weathered faces that Henham found on the moor.
