The Hound of the Baskervilles

A hound the size of a calf, a moor with a bog that swallows ponies, and a family curse that Holmes refuses to believe in. Doyle had killed his detective off eight years earlier and brought him back only for this one case, setting it before the fall at the Reichenbach; the public forced the rest of the resurrection. Much of the Dartmoor in the book comes from a walking trip Doyle took with a friend who told him the local legend. Twenty-two plates by painters including Henry Scott Tuke and William Frederick Yeames, from a sailor's yarn to a London street, carry the atmosphere of the tale.
