Brothers

Two brothers, one of whom takes the blame and the farm, while the other takes the name and the career. Horace Annesley Vachell had ranched in California for seventeen years before he wrote, and the American chapters are drawn from that. The book turns on a substitution the reader is told about early, so that the suspense is entirely moral. Fifty-eight plates, from Gainsborough to Wilkie, keep the rural and domestic scenes of cottage, field and family that this story of two brothers never leaves behind.
