A woman is attacked in a room locked from the inside with no way out, and a young reporter solves it before the police do. Leroux was a court reporter himself and built the puzzle to be fair: everything needed is on the page. It is the locked-room story against which the others are measured. This edition is bound with a gallery of 58 plates of painting from 1816 to 1919, among them works by Jean Béraud, Camille Corot and Gustave Caillebotte.
