Pictures from Italy

Dickens takes his family to Italy for a year and writes down what he sees: Genoa, the Carnival at Rome, a public execution he watched from a window, and the roads between. He wrote it as letters home first and kept the tone - no ruins-and-reverence, and a great deal about how people actually lived. This edition adds a gallery of 37 plates, among them paintings by Canaletto, Francesco Giuseppe Casanova and Giuseppe Zais, with views of the Grand Canal and the English road.
