Tales of Fantasy and Fact

Stories that step just past the ordinary - a kinetoscope that shows scenes from the past, two rival ghosts in one house - by a critic who helped invent the teaching of American literature in universities. Matthews wrote them for the magazines of the 1890s and kept the tone dry. This edition binds 57 plates of painting with the stories, among them Goya, Mesdag and Van Gogh, and restores and colours its single in-text illustration.
