A king who has sworn to marry a new wife each night and kill her by morning meets one who begins a story and refuses to finish it. Andrew Lang made this selection for readers who wanted the Nights without the scholarship, keeping Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sindbad and the Forty Thieves and quietly dropping what a Victorian nursery could not be given. The frame is the best argument for storytelling ever put in a book: a woman keeps herself alive by leaving off in the right place. Its 60 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
