Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar

An earthquake buries Tarzan under the treasure vaults of Opar, and he comes out of it with no memory of who he is, while a Belgian officer walks off with the jewels and a raiding party takes his wife. Burroughs wrote amnesia into the middle of his most famous character and let two hundred pages run on what is left of a man when the name is gone. La of Opar returns, still holding the sacrificial knife. Fifty-six plates of painting from 1810 to 1921, among them Homer and Martin, carry the lost-world landscape of desert plants, buried cities and far harbours that Tarzan stumbles through.
