This Western novel narrates the story of a U.S. Deputy Marshall aiding the famed Texas Ranger, Vaughn Steele, in purging the disorderly town of Fairfield. Despite the town's mayor conspiring with a group of bandits, Steele falls for his daughter while the Marshall falls for his niece. The narrative's exceptional psychological complexity differentiates it from most Western novels.
