The House on the Borderland

Two anglers on holiday in the west of Ireland find a manuscript in the ruins of a house above a chasm; it belonged to a recluse who wrote down what came out of the pit, and then what happened to time itself. Hodgson went to sea at thirteen and spent eight years there, and the loneliness of watches at night is all over this book. Lovecraft thought it a classic and said so loudly. Fifty-six plates of sea, moonlight and far volcanoes, among them Turner and Crome, keep the chasm and the night watches in view.
