Katy Carr's sister goes west with an invalid brother to a Colorado valley, keeps house in a ranch hotel, and finds that the mountains have their own ideas about her plans. Susan Coolidge wrote the fourth Katy book in 1888 and gave the quiet sister the story. The illness that takes them there is real and unresolved, and the courtship is conducted almost entirely in the open air. Forty-eight plates by painters including William Merritt Chase and Childe Hassam carry the open-air light of the story, from gardens and bays to still lifes.
