The man of action, detective and ex-British Army Captain Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, is back in another adventure in the murder mystery novel, "The Challenge". Drummond meets with his friends Colonel Henry Talbot and Mister Standish at Talbot's residence one evening, where they discuss the shocking news in the evening newspaper, the unexpected death of their associate Jimmy Latimer. Jimmy was on a trip overseas on holiday in Paris where he evidently stumbled on a big business deal compelling him to return home. But he never made it back alive.
