Short Stories for High Schools

The stories a generation of American teenagers were set to read: Poe, Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Kipling, O. Henry, Stevenson and others, chosen for the classroom by editors who believed a short story could teach form. It is a portrait of taste — what a country decided its children should know about how a story works. Newly typeset for this edition. Fifty-five plates of American landscape from Cole to Bierstadt, from Yosemite to Estes Park, accompany the stories as a visual counterpart to the frontier and small-town settings the editors chose.
