Records of a Family of Engineers (Annotated)

Records of a Family of Engineers is Robert Louis Stevenson's richly textured tribute to the Scottish lighthouse builders from whom he descended. Combining family chronicle, maritime history, and moral essay, the book recounts the labours of Robert Stevenson and his successors amid reefs, storms, and perilous northern seas. Its prose is at once documentary and romantic, placing practical engineering within the nineteenth-century literature of heroic vocation and national service. Stevenson wrote from intimate inheritance as much as archival knowledge. Born into a distinguished dynasty of engineers serving the Northern Lighthouse Board, he was educated with the expectation that he might continue their profession, though ill health, artistic temperament, and literary ambition drew him elsewhere. The book reveals his complex filial imagination: admiration for discipline, courage, and public duty mingles with the self-awareness of a son who chose another craft. This volume is highly recommended to readers interested in Stevenson beyond his fiction, as well as to students of Victorian prose, Scottish history, and technological modernity. It illuminates how lighthouses became symbols of order against chaos, and how Stevenson transformed family memory into enduring literature. This enriched edition has been carefully crafted to add value to your reading experience.- A succinct Introduction situates the work's timeless appeal and themes.- The Synopsis outlines the central plot, highlighting key developments without spoiling critical twists.- A detailed Historical Context immerses you in the era's events and influences that shaped the writing.- An Author Biography reveals milestones in the author's life, illuminating the personal insights behind the text.- A thorough Analysis dissects symbols, motifs, and character arcs to unearth underlying meanings.- Reflection questions prompt you to engage personally with the work's messages, connecting them to modern life.- Hand‐picked Memorable Quotes shine a spotlight on moments of literary brilliance.- Interactive footnotes clarify unusual references, historical allusions, and archaic phrases for an effortless, more informed read.
