The Boys' and Girls' Pliny

Pliny's "Natural History" for young readers: the elephant that could write, the remedies made of herbs and worse, the accounts of India and Africa, and the eruption that killed him. John S. White selected and arranged the extracts in the 1880s. Pliny believed nearly everything he was told, which makes him the best guide there is to what a Roman thought the world contained. Twenty-three plates after painters from Claude to Monet, from the Pantheon to Waterloo Bridge, extend the Roman survey of the world with a later eye on its ruins and its weather.
