In her preface to the book, Nicholson states that her intention was "to give some hint of the forces that have made for cultivation in Indiana".The word Hoosier comes from an Indian word for corn, "hoosa." Indiana flatboatmen taking corn or maize to New Orleans came to be known as "hoosa men" or Hoosiers.
