The Mission-Box

A Sunday-school class of girls sets out to fill a mission box, and the richest of them objects that a gardener's daughter and a washerwoman's are not suitable company. Lucy Guernsey wrote Sunday-school fiction with an unusually sharp ear for snobbery. The doing good in the title turns out to be the easy half. Fifty-nine plates after Winslow Homer, Albert Bierstadt and others, from Yosemite rock to a Normandy church, trace the landscapes and quiet lives against which the story's small charities are measured.
