The Seven Who Were Hanged

Five revolutionaries and two common criminals wait in adjoining cells for the morning they will be hanged, and the story gives each of them the hours as they experience them. Andreyev wrote it in 1908 after the mass executions that followed the revolution of 1905, and dedicated it to Tolstoy. This edition carries Herman Bernstein's translation and a gallery of 53 bound plates, among them paintings by Ilya Repin, Boris Kustodiev and Ivan Shishkin.
