Anne of the Island

Anne leaves Avonlea for Redmond College and finds that growing up costs more than she expected: friends marry, a beloved house is given up, and Gilbert Blythe asks a question she answers wrongly. Montgomery published it in 1915, seven years after the first book. It is the funniest of the Anne books and the saddest, and the one in which the heroine stops being a child by learning what she does not want. Fifty-three plates by painters including Winslow Homer and George Inness follow the heroine's passage from farm and shore to college town, matching the novel's turn from girlhood to whatever comes next.
