The Legend of Sir Lancelot du Lac

The Lancelot romances compared: the French prose cycle, the German versions, the Welsh material and the English, and what each did with the same three or four episodes. Jessie Weston was the leading English Arthurian scholar of her generation and later wrote "From Ritual to Romance". Her method is source criticism, and her conclusions about the older layers still frame the argument. Sixty plates of painting, from Turner to Rossetti, trace the romantic and chivalric themes that run through the Lancelot cycle.
