Sixteenth-century Edinburgh, a woman accused of a crime she did not commit, and the King's Advocate who must decide what the law is for. Grant wrote over fifty novels of Scottish history, most of them founded on records he had read in the originals, and served in the army before he wrote any of them. Fifty-three plates, among them works by Edvard Munch and Edmund Blair Leighton, gather scenes of courts, crowds and castles that echo the book's sixteenth-century Edinburgh.
