White Fang

A wolf-dog born in the Yukon is beaten into a fighting animal, sold from hand to hand, and then given to a man who will not hit him. Jack London wrote it in 1906 as the mirror of The Call of the Wild: the earlier book takes a dog into the wild, this one brings a wild thing into the house. The fights are exact, and the taming takes longer than the cruelty did. Fifty-seven plates of northern forest and wooded country by painters including Ivan Shishkin and Albert Bierstadt carry the wild, wooded world of the Yukon through the book.
