Before Adam

A modern man dreams every night the life of a hominid ancestor - the tree camps, the fire folk, the flight from the pack - and wakes each morning with the memory intact. London wrote it in 1907 out of the new evolutionary science, and it treats prehistory as something that could be remembered rather than reconstructed. Twenty-eight plates of forest and river painting by William Simson and Franz Xaver Petter catch the wooded, remembered world the dreamer wakes into.
