A Rebel War Clerk's Diary at the Confederate States Capital (Annotated)

A Rebel War Clerk's Diary at the Confederate States Capital is an unusually immediate chronicle of the American Civil War as seen from Richmond, the administrative heart of the Confederacy. Written in daily entries, it combines political observation, wartime rumor, bureaucratic detail, and vivid accounts of scarcity, inflation, morale, and military crisis. Its style is plain, urgent, and documentary rather than ornamental, placing it within the tradition of nineteenth-century war diaries while giving historians an invaluable insider's view of Confederate civil society and government. J. B. Jones, a novelist, journalist, and clerk in the Confederate War Department, occupied a position both modest and revealing. Close enough to official correspondence and public anxiety to record the pulse of the capital, yet distant from high command, he wrote with the sharpness of a working observer. His literary training shaped the diary's narrative energy, while his employment exposed him to the frustrations, hopes, and contradictions of the Confederate experiment. This book is recommended to readers seeking more than battlefield history. It is essential for students of the Civil War, Southern political culture, wartime administration, and everyday endurance under siege.
