Pioneers in Australasia

The opening of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands, from Tasman and Cook to the overland crossings, told for readers who wanted the whole story in one volume. Johnston had been a colonial administrator and explorer in Africa himself and wrote with a practitioner's eye for what these journeys cost. Fifty-eight plates, among them sea pieces by William Hodges and J. M. W. Turner, trace the same ocean crossings the text describes.
